Why doesn’t my new website appear on Google?
Because Google has not found and indexed it yet, or has indexed it but does not yet rank it for anything people search. New sites are not added to Google automatically; they are discovered, crawled, indexed and then ranked, and every step takes time.
The four stages
- Discovery: Google learns your site exists, via links or a submitted sitemap.
- Crawling: Googlebot reads your pages.
- Indexing: the pages are filed so they CAN appear in results. Days to a few weeks for a new site.
- Ranking: where you actually place for real searches. This is the slow part: weeks to months, driven by content and reputation.
Speed the early stages up
- Set up Google Search Console (free) and submit your sitemap. This replaces waiting-to-be-found with telling Google directly.
- Create your Google Business Profile; for local trades it often brings visibility faster than the website itself.
- Get a few real links: directories, suppliers, your socials.
The honest expectation
Searching your own business name: expect to appear within days to a couple of weeks. Ranking for "plumber in Newquay" against businesses established for years: months of consistent work. Anyone promising page one in a week is selling something other than SEO.
The takeaway
- Google discovers, crawls, indexes, then ranks; each step takes time.
- Search Console + a sitemap is the fastest way to get indexed.
- Ranking for competitive searches takes months, not days.
