Why is my website slow?
Nine times out of ten it is one of four things: oversized images, overloaded cheap hosting, too many plugins or scripts, or no caching. Often it is several at once, stacked.
The big four
- Images. A phone photo is 4MB+. Put ten on a page and you are asking visitors to download a small film. Properly resized and compressed, the same photos are a tenth the size.
- Hosting. On £2-a-month hosting your site queues for a processor shared with thousands of other sites. No optimisation out-runs an overloaded server.
- Plugins and scripts. Each one adds code to load. Chat widgets, sliders, trackers and page builders stack up; some load their whole toolkit on every page.
- No caching. Without it, the server rebuilds every page from scratch for every visitor instead of handing out a ready-made copy.
How to see for yourself
Run your site through PageSpeed Insights (free, by Google). It scores the site and lists the heaviest problems in order. You do not need to understand every metric; the top three suggestions are usually the whole story.
Why it matters commercially
Visitors give a slow site about three seconds before backing out, and Google measures that. Speed is not a techie vanity metric; it is enquiries.
The takeaway
- Images, hosting, plugins and caching cause most slowness.
- PageSpeed Insights will tell you which ones are yours.
- Every extra second of load time costs real visitors.
